BASS Reporters wanted: help us cover the scene

DNBSA is back, and we want to cover South African drum n bass like never before. Every night, every crew, every city. From warehouse raves in Cape Town to Carfax in Joburg, from Durban's underground to the next open-air in the bush. There's too much going on for a handful of people to keep up with, so we're putting out the call.

We need BASS Reporters across the country.

What's a BASS Reporter?

Someone who's already there. On the dancefloor, at the front, by the speakers, in the smoking area talking to the DJ after their set. You're the eyes and ears of the scene, and we want to help you tell its story.

• Cover the nights. Write up the parties you go to: who played, what went off, the tune that made the whole room lose it.
• Interview the DJs. Sit down with the selectors, producers and MCs you rate. The legends, the new names, the ones nobody's talking about yet.
• Document the scene. Crews, venues, labels, history. What's happening in your city right now, and what happened back in the day.
• Spread the word. Tell us what's coming up so it lands in the events guide.

Photographers: pro kit or phone, we want it

If you shoot the scene, send it through. Proper camera, point-and-shoot, or phone photos straight off the dancefloor: all welcome. Some of the best rave photos ever taken are blurry, sweaty and shot on whatever was in someone's pocket. Crowd shots, DJs behind the decks, the lights, the flyers, the queue outside, the sunrise afterwards. It all tells the story.

Every skill counts

You don't need experience, a portfolio or a fancy title. If you love drum n bass and want to help, there's a place for you:

• Writers: reviews, interviews, features, scene reports, hot takes.
• Photographers and videographers: nights, festivals, sets, aftermovies.
• Podcasters and radio heads: interviews, scene chat, a DNBSA mix series.
• Designers and illustrators: graphics, covers, artwork.
• Social media heads: stories, reels, keeping the community buzzing.
• Archivists: the people with boxes of old flyers, burnt CDs, mixtapes and photos from the 90s and 2000s. Help us save the history before it's lost.
• Anything else: if you've got an idea, a skill or just some time, tell us. We're open to help in whatever shape it comes.
